FAMILY FOR THE SOLITARY
Home in Shanghai (2)
After leaving Fuzhou, I returned to Shanghai, the most affluent city of the nation. Not only had I no interest in pursuing material enjoyment, my illness was becoming more serious, rendering me unable to get up from bed. Consequently those people, who were responsible1 for looking me up with the intention of persuading me to join (Three-Self) church activities and certain ※associations§ or to visit certain prominent figures or foreigners, came in vain and were disappointed.
God blessed me with ※lines fallen to me in pleasant places; yes, I have a good inheritance§ (Psalm 16:6). He let me live quietly in a chamber with an area of only 9 square meters, doing nothing but to watch His own glorious works in order that I could truly apprehend His name being ※Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God§ (Isaiah 9:6).
On the night of June 15 th, 1980, I suffered a relapse and was critically ill until the 1981 New Year Festival. Brothers and sisters took turns to care for me day and night. I also personally experienced the grace of ※The Lord will strengthen him on his bed of illness; You will sustain him on his sickbed§ (Psalm 41:3). I fully tasted the sweetness of the perfect care of brothers and sisters for a feeble member. The suffering of physical illness brought in its wake the sweet presence of the Lord. Though faced with the possibility of physical death at any time or day (some members had even prepared my ※burial gown§), yet I ※I know whom I have believed and am persuaded that He is able to keep what I have committed to Him until that Day§ (II Timothy 1:12).
Shanghai was the hub of sea, land and air transportation. There was incessant flow of people in all directions, and I had foreign members visiting me almost everyday. Through the Lord＊s love and by submission to the Holy Spirit, we had intimate fellowship in the Lord, praying together for the warfare confronting the Church and for evangelism. In the chamber, we served God on bended knees: ※O Lord, revive Your work in the midst of the years§ (Habakkuk 3:2).
During my illness, God moved 3 local doctors (all sisters in Christ) in Shanghai to treat me. Besides diagnosing and prescribing medication, they also gave me injections, so that I did not even have to leave the chamber for treatment. Soon afterwards, they left consecutively to live overseas. The Lord had not deserted me but had moved physicians thousands of miles away to come to treat me. At last, He amazingly led me to the vast territory of Shandong Province.
